The last church camp show will be on Wednesday, October 15, 2014. At Double Happiness.
This band was loosely formed in 2010. A handful of apartment mates began creating music in hopes of bringing more life into our lives, while attending a rigid private university in Mt Vernon, Ohio (how I found myself up there is is another story on its own).
After I was told not to come back to the school for lacking the required amount of chapel “credits”, it’s needless to say that those of us playing in this “unidentified christian college instrumental band” went each in our own direction.
The songs, however remained, and I was still interested in playing them with a band. So eventually I met Esther, and she joined as the vocalist and bassist, we called ourselves “church camp” (lol). We still had a dedicated friend from the school playing drums with us, so we started playing some open mics.
At one of these open mics we met Dave, who would later become our drummer when Michael was going in his own direction. Dave helped us get some of our initial shows, at places like cafe bourbon st, dude locker, etc.
We found our love for house shows when Shane Natalie offered us a spot on the bill at a VVK show one night. Around that time, we recorded our first EP with bobby Leonard.
So far, neat connections we’re being made in the simple, enjoyable act of talking to strangers, which has been my favorite part of playing shows.
So by now, the line up of this band, now called “church camp” had changed and shifted multiple times, at one time having as many as 7 people, to as little as 2, since starting in the apartment. (Side note: the opening riff for the first song “time to go” was conceived immediately after finishing the 6th and final beer I was able to sneak into this dry campus apartment)
Shortly after bringing Dave on board, we met Ryan Douglas, who got us on some really cool shows. The rest of the guys in Srvvlst have helped us in many band things, and we we’re able to help them tour with our van.
We then agreed to take on another band member, Liam Ryan. He immeasurably raised the energy level and fun in our band activities. We recorded another EP. After a while things didn’t work out, so we went back to our 3 piece line up.
Esther and I started having shows in our basement (hence the earlier discovery of house show love), to try and create the circumstances and be the change we wanted to see in our community. Sometimes there have been bad attitudes, but overall that experience has been incredible.
We now find ourselves at a point where we look back and realize, we’ve experienced way more than we could’ve imagined. Playing cool places, meeting cool people, doing cool things. Personally, I wanted to play music in order to travel, but this band has led me to a greater appreciation and awareness for my own city.
And we’re not done, but this band will be, in the near future.
I’m not sure of the exact reason, but I’m sure there doesn’t need to be one. It is a gut thing, felt but not understood. During the course of time that this band has been active, Esther and I have gotten married, and Dave has gotten married. We’ve spread love to all the people we’ve played with and for. Barely causing anyone to hate us.
There’s the sense that we’ve fulfilled some tiny purpose in the community, and it’s time to move on. So if you’re looking for a reason, it’s simply that our work is almost finished. It’s coming to a close, and this will be October 15th. We have a handful of events until then, so we hope to see you there!
Love, nick & churchcamp
